Flüchtlingsprojekt / Steering Committee Meeting, 30. Juni 2016

Submitted by Corinne Vetter on Thu, 14/07/2016 - 16:41

Refugee Assistance Project / Steering Committee Meeting, June 30th, 2016

The second Steering Committee Meeting of the Refugee Assistance Project was held on June 30th at the St-Ansgar Church in Notre-Dame-de-Grace.

The committee’s member organizations are St Ansgar, St John’s Lutheran, St Michael’s and All Angels, Christ the Redeemer, the Johanniter Orden (Order of Saint John), and the German Society. At this meeting the German Society was represented by Ms. Gisela Steinle and Ms. Sabine Kerner.

The agenda consisted of various points, including the decision on the name of the initiative, as well as the tasks and objectives of the various task groups (Promotion, Job Search, Housing, Clothing, etc.).

As for the name of the initiative, the choice fell on “LAram” - Lutheran Anglican Refugee Alliance of Montreal.

The “Promotion” task group has been very active already and will issue a monthly newsletter with updates on the project as of autumn of 2016. Other task groups are being established and organized, and will report on their projects at the next Steering Committee Meeting.

The Steering Committee works closely together with Action Réfugiés Montréal, an officially recognized refugee aid organization. The Action Réfugiés Montréal has presented the Committee with the portraits of two African families who are in need of financial assistance as well as practical help with bureaucratic affairs, adapting to a new lifestyle, learning a foreign language and other issues. Talks are currently held with both families, and the next meeting will decide if one of the families can be included into the refugee assistance project.

To date the six Alliance members have promised to contribute $29,000 to the project. This sum is sufficient to support a family with two children for a year, and needs to be now raised through fundraising.

Some task groups, like the “Promotion” and the “Fundraising” group in particular, are still looking for volunteers who would like to participate in the LAram project. Please feel free to contact Ms. Lili Ahn, Email: lili.ahn@deutschegesellschaft.ca, Phone +1-514-612-2188, ext. 200 for further information.

Thank you for your support!
