Im August 2020 rieft das Goethe Institut wir Videokünstler*innen aus Kanada und Deutschland dazu auf, uns ihre Ideen zu dem Thema „Die Stadt in Zeiten des Virus“ einzureichen: Erobert sich die Natur die Innenstädte zurück? Wie wirken sich soziale Regeln und medizinische Hygienevorgaben auf unsere Körper aus? Wie bewegen wir uns im städtischen Raum? Wie interagieren wir miteinander in Zeiten des social distancing? - Die acht ausgewählten Videos werden nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit auf die Schaufensterleinwände des Goethe-Instituts Montreal am St. Laurent Boulevard bis März 2021 projiziert.

Der dritte Film der Serie - Why or Why not? - wird vom 21. Januar bis zum 4. Februar projiziert.
Über den Film
Die Arbeit Why or Why not? wurde von den Internationalen Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen in Auftrag gegeben. Lars Henrik Gass, der Festivaldirektor, bat Filmemacher*innen während des Lockdowns in Deutschland um einen Videobeitrag der die Frage verhandelt: Kann und soll man jetzt Filme machen?
Die Herausforderung, einen Film ohne Crew vor oder hinter der Kamera zu produzieren, war für Honeit weniger interessant als die massive Perspektivverschiebung des eigenen Tuns zu untersuchen, angesichts einer weltweiten Pandemie. Deshalb hat sie die Frage auf Why or Why not? reduziert, die weniger nach den Möglichkeiten oder Unmöglichkeiten einer Fortführung (künstlerische) Praxis im Lockdown fragt, als vielmehr generell ein Fortschreiben des Lebens ‚wie gehabt‘ im Zeitalter des Kapitalozäns infrage stellt.
Die Kamera, die während des ersten Lockdowns in den Straßen Berlins im März 2020 aufgestellt wurde, rahmt mehrere Tableaux vivants des neuen Corona-Alltags mit Kommentaren analoger Texttafeln, die in das Bild gehalten werden. Zwei gegenläufige Erzählungen werden in unheimlicher Vertrautheit vorgestellt.

En août 2020, l'Institut Goethe invité des artistes du Canada et d'Allemagne à soumettre leurs idées sur le thème «La ville à l'heure du virus» : la nature reprendra-t-elle ses droits dans les centres-villes ? Quelles incidences les règles sociales et les consignes médicales en termes d'hygiène ont-elles sur nos corps ? Comment nous déplaçons-nous dans l'espace urbain ? Comment interagissons-nous à l'ère de la distanciation sociale ?
Les huit vidéos choisis par un jury seront projetées à la tombée de la nuit sur grand écran, sur la façade vitrée de notre bâtiment situé boulevard Saint-Laurent jusqu’en mars 2021.

À propos du film
L'œuvre Why or Why not? a été commandée par le Festival international du court métrage d'Oberhausen. Lars Henrik Gass, le directeur du festival, a demandé à des cinéastes pendant le confinement en Allemagne de produire une contribution vidéo qui traite de la question : Peut-on et doit-on faire des films en ce moment?
Le défi de produire un film sans équipe devant ou derrière la caméra intéressait Honeit moins que d'examiner le changement de perspective massif de ses propres actions face à une pandémie mondiale. C'est pourquoi elle a réduit la question à « Pourquoi ou pourquoi pas ? », ce qui pose moins la question des possibilités ou des impossibilités d'une poursuite de la pratique (artistique) dans le confinement, mais plutôt celle d'une poursuite générale de la vie « comme avant » à l'ère du capitalocene.
La caméra, installée dans les rues de Berlin lors des premières fermetures en mars 2020, cadre plusieurs tableaux vivants de la nouvelle vie quotidienne de la Covid-19 avec des commentaires de panneaux de texte analogiques qui sont maintenus dans l'image. Deux récits opposés sont présentés dans une étrange familiarité.

In August 2020, The Goethe Institut invited video artists from Canada and Germany to submit their ideas on the topic "The City in Times of the Virus": Will nature reconquer the inner cities? How do social rules and medical hygiene rules affect our bodies? How will we move in the urban space? How will we interact in the era of social distancing? - The eight selected videos will be projected after dark onto screens placed in the storefront windows of the Goethe-Institut Montreal on Boulevard St. Laurent until March 2021.

About the film
The work Why or Why not? was commissioned by the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. Lars Henrik Gass, the festival director, asked filmmakers during the lockdown in Germany to make a video contribution to negotiate the question: Can and should one make films now?
The challenge of producing a film without a crew in front of or behind the camera was less interesting to Honeit than examining the massive shift in perspective of one's own actions in the face of a worldwide pandemic. That is why she reduced the question to Why or Why not?, which is less about the possibilities or impossibilities of continuing an (artistic) practice in a lockdown, but more about questioning in general a continuation of life 'as before' in the age of the Capitalocene.
The camera, which was set up in the streets of Berlin during the first lockdown in March 2020, frames several tableaux vivants of the new Corona everyday life, commenting via analogue text panels that are held into the picture. Two opposing narratives are presented in uncanny familiarity.
